BALINESE MUSIC AND DANCE AT ST. LUKES ON MAY 2
St. Luke’s Arts “OVER THE HEDGE” Concerts will present a program of Balinese Music & Dance on Saturday, May 2, at 6:00pm. Two traditional orchestras combine for this special event--Gamelan Dharma Swara, from the Indonesian Consulate in New York, and Gamelan Yowana Sari, from the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College--under the direction of Professor Michael Lipsey. Featured performers include Guest Artist and Composer I Dewa Ketut Alit and Guest Dancer Noopur Singha. The gamelan orchestra offers a spectacular visual and musical experience. The instruments are hand-crafted in Bali, each with a unique tuning and splendid decorations. They are played with amazing precision coordination, producing a sound-world like no other--involving the listener deeply in a panorama of styles: festive and glittering, meditative and serene, purposeful and exciting. Under Michael Lipsey’s popular direction, this is music that brings audiences to their feet and resonates long in the memory. On its long-awaited return appearance to St. Luke’s, his orchestra will more than double its size, in the company of New York City’s most prestigious gamelan orchestra, enhanced by the world-renowned virtuosity of its guest performers. One performance only. $10 per person. Hands-on demonstrations afterwards, with Balinese refreshments to follow. Lambert Hall, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 253 Glen Avenue, Sea Cliff, NY.
