HANUKKAH HAPPENS FOR ALL AT THE SEA CLIFF FIRE HOUSE
December 18, 2014 -- Sea Cliff residents from a variety of religious and spiritual persuasions turned out for Hanukkah Happening Tuesday evening at the Sea Cliff Fire Department to enjoy good company and celebrate the holiday's traditions. Children spun dreidels, worked on crafts, and decorated cookies while snacking on latkes and chocolate gelt. Later in the evening, celebrants marked the first night of the Festival of Lights, with the lighting of menorahs. Rabbi Irwin Huberman of Congregation Tifareth Israel (CTI) in Glen Cove offered some historical background to the holiday, eliciting responses from the children, and explained and led the singing of the three blessings that are recited with the lighting of the menorah. Cantor Gustavo Gutlin of CTI entertained the crowd performing traditional Hanakkah songs and Sea Cliff resident, Kathy Virgilio performed her original tribute to Hanukkah, "Miracle of Light." This Sea Cliff Hanukkah tradition, which has been held for more than three decades, was organized by resident Julie Gordon-Hert, Click Here for a youtube video of Kathy Virgilio performing Miracle of Light with Sea Cliff musicians Frank Ferrara and Matt Schneider that was posted this past March.
