VIKINGS CELEBRATE HOMECOMING WITH ROUT OF SOUTHSIDE
October 20, 2015 --With a strong defensive performance and an offensive onslaught led by Quarterback Ryan Aughavin and running back Antonio Evangelista, the North Shore Football Vikings lived up to Homecoming expectations this past Saturday afternoon with a rout of the South Side Cyclones.
The home team established control early in the game. After stopping the Cyclones on its first three downs, junior Nick Liotta rushed through the right side of the defensive line, and with a fully outstretched dive, blocked the Southside punt, giving North Shore great field position for its first possession. The Vikings took advantage soon thereafter, when Antonio Evangelista rushed 9 yards for his first of two touchdowns on the day. Before the quarter ended, the Vikings would get into the end zone twice again, with Aughavin sprinting down the left sideline for a 65 yard score on a quarterback keeper, and only two minutes later connecting with wide receiver Frank Castiglione on a 39 yard touchdown pass down the right sideline. After a scoreless second quarter, and the two teams entering the locker room with the Vikings on top 22-0, the North Shore offense came out strong for the third. Although turning it over once on downs deep in the Southside end at the two yard line, the Vikings upped their total to 29 after Evangelista once again rushed from 9 yards out for the score. North Shore added a field goal when kicker John Macgliocco booted a 36 yarder through the center of the uprights. For most of the first three quarters, the Vikings defense held strong, keeping the Cyclones out of the red zone. And when they got close, big plays ended South Side's momentum - once, in the first when defensive lineman Nick Ruggiero dropped the South Side quarterback for a 13 yard loss after having led his team to the North Shore 35; and later in the third quarter when, after Southside again made it to the North Shore 35, Castiglione, now a defensive back, intercepted a pass returning it to the opponent's 29 yardline. The Cyclones scored their only touchdown of the day on the first play of the fourth quarter. FINAL SCORE - NORTH SHORE 32 - SOUTHSIDE 7. BACK TO WEEKLY |
