Children’s Bike Parade, Northwinds Symphonic Band Concert and Fireworks!
June 8, 2017…The City of Glen Cove announces its annual July 4th festivities will feature great music, fireworks and a children’s bike parade. “The July 4th celebration in Glen Cove is a favorite celebration of our residents,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello. “We’ve got fireworks, a classic children’s bike parade and people often enjoy spending the day at Morgan Memorial Park with swimming, picnics and playground fun.”
Coordinated by the Glen Cove Youth Bureau, the Glen Cove July 4th Children’s Bike Parade is a highly anticipated tradition for children and their families. Bikes, scooters, wagons, strollers and battery-powered vehicles roll down the streets at 10 a.m. from Robert M. Finley Middle School as children enjoy riding through downtown Glen Cove to the Village Square with their spirited energy and patriotism in full view. Children are asked to arrive at the Robert M. Finley Middle School at 9:30 a.m. to decorate their bikes/wagons etc. and the rain date is July 5.
All children are invited to participate in a bike decorating contest and create a special July 4th craft. For the bike contest, winners are selected in three categories: Most Patriotic, Most Original and Best Group. The winner receives special prizes and acknowledgement by Mayor Spinello.
There will also be free refreshments, giveaways and a Patriotic singalong in front of Glen Cove’s City Hall, 9 Glen Street.
After the morning bike parade, all residents are invited to visit Morgan Memorial Park for a 7:30 p.m. concert featuring the Northwinds Symphonic Band and a 9:15 p.m. Fireworks display by Grucci. Under the musical direction of Helen Bauer and guest conductor Barbara Sherwin, the Northwinds Symphonic Band is committed to the performance of standard concert band repertoire including marches, Broadway and movie favorites, transcriptions, the 20th Century classics and new releases. This year’s theme is “Land of Liberty” and the band’s performance will include familiar marches and patriotic favorites, selections from The Producers, and the music of Leonard Bernstein and John Williams. Also on the program will be a medley of Duke Ellington favorites. Soprano Stephanie Horowitz will join the band for the Big Band standard, Birth of the Blues and Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Northwinds will honor the men and women of the U.S. military with a medley of the Armed Forces Anthems and close the concert with the Official March of the United States, Stars and Stripes Forever. The band is a diverse group of musicians of all ages (ages 13-83), occupations and experiences and will play a variety of America’s Patriotic favorites.
The 2017 sky show will be curated by Fireworks by Grucci and include an exciting array of pyrotechnic wonders, barrages, grand illuminations, rockets and multi-patterned scenes that will light up the sky. In case of rain, the concert will be held indoors at St. Patrick’s Church Parish Hall on July 4th and the Fireworks will be rescheduled for Tuesday, July 5 at 9:15 p.m.
Residents are reminded that bags and backpacks are subject to search at Morgan Memorial Park for contraband including alcohol and fireworks. Parking restrictions will be in effect in the Landing neighborhood on July 4. Starting at 9 a.m. on July 4, there will be no parking on Germaine Street, Landing Road or McLoughlin Street west of Carpenter Street. Parking for individuals with Handicap Parking Permits will be available in the Morgan Park parking lot. For residents who will watch the fireworks from the Long Island Sound, safe boating is encouraged.
